Over the last month I’ve written about the four practices that we offer to our members at WMC to help us mature as disciples of Jesus – namely, to CONNECT in small groups, to SERVE faithfully, to GIVE generously and to WORSHIP regularly.
When it comes to the practice of regular worship, we speak about “going to church” on Sundays, but it would be better to say that we gather as the church on Sundays (because the church is the people, not the building). Semantics aside, what happens on a Sunday is a vital part of our weekly rhythm as disciples of Jesus. Coming together in worship helps to re-align us with the heartbeat of God and remind us that we belong to a wonderful community of Christ-followers.
Our worship is not just communal however – we also need to make space for regular private worship: time spent in silence, in prayer, in the Scriptures, with God. There are a wealth of excellent materials available to us to help establish and maintain a daily devotional practice. Two apps worth considering are Lectio365 and PrayAsYouGo, as well as our own WMC web app, which provides access to daily prayers and readings, the Quiet Moments, and an electronic copy of Faith for Daily Living.
