I spent half an hour at my son's school one morning earlier this week for a father's day activity with him. We were given smarties and icing sugar to decorate a car-shaped biscuit, we participated in a team quiz together, and we were given a list of questions for him to ask me.

The other stuff was fun, but it was the questions that have stayed with me. They included questions about some of my childhood memories, I was asked which of my own characteristics I see in my son, what I remember of the day on which he was born, and so on. These are not topics that come up every day and it was a rich and intimate conversation with my boy. Although the situation was a bit contrived, it reminded me how important it is to try and speak about more than just what happened in our day with our loved ones. There is a whole world of rich relational potential just below the surface!

Happy fathers day to the Dad's in our community! This weekend as we are especially aware of the gift of family, may there be many opportunities for conversations that go below the surface :)
