If you've been following the progress of the Springbok rugby team over the last few years, one of the things you will hear being said all the time by other nations is how envious they are of the incredible depth of talent that South Africa has to draw on.
Look a little closer and you will see that this is not because of unfair global DNA distribution :) but instead, is the fruit of a very intentional strategy that Rassie has adopted from day one. In his first test match in charge, instead of picking the strongest possible team, Rassie selected 13 uncapped players to play their first test against Wales. And we lost. In fact, in his first year as Bok coach (2018) Rassie's team only managed to win 7 out of 14 games. It took time, but exposing less experienced players to test match rugby (even if it meant losing some games) has resulted in the depth of talent and experience today that is the envy of the world.
I think there are lessons there for us as the church. What would it look like if we went out of our way to draw people who feel inexperienced or unqualified into service and ministry roles here? There may be others more qualified who could do a better job in the short term, but imagine if in our small groups, mission projects, ministries, worship services we took every chance we could to include some uncapped players. That sounds a lot like the way Jesus started out with an unlikely group of fishermen ...
