There are many things that could be said about the apostle Peter. He was impulsive, he often opened his mouth before engaging his mind and he really dropped the ball on the night Jesus was betrayed and handed over for trial. But by the end of his life, St Peter is remembered as the courageous and inspiring first leader of the church (Catholics would say the first Pope).

I wonder if we had met Peter for the first time when Jesus did, would we have seen these qualities in him? Jesus did. There is a wonderful moment in Matthew's gospel (Mt 16:13ff) where Jesus looks at Peter and instead of seeing his flaws says to him, "Peter: you are a rock, and on this rock I will build my church".

You know the words of St Teresa who said that we are the hands and feet of Christ in this world; consider that we are also invited to see with the eyes of Jesus and to speak encouragement over each other. Who might need to hear from you today that they are "a rock", or a champion or a legend?
