Family Worship – Sunday 05 April 2020

Before commencing worship, if possible, gather some palm fronds or other greenery and arrange them in the area you’ll be gathering.

Preparation: Quiet Music (Take a moment to relax, eyes closed listening to the music)

Prayer to begin Worship (People may alternate praying)

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

God our Encourager,
as we gather here again, we seek to encounter you in our midst.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

The past week has been very strange,
yet in the strangeness you have been present.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

We long for your closeness and comfort,
through our prayers, words and songs,
and especially in the deep recognition of your presence.

All: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Amen.

Song: Hosanna! (Click on title to go to song)

Worship Prayer (People may alternate praying)
Holy God,
You come to us in unassuming ways -
in gentle sunrises and sunsets day after day,
in fresh fragrances following showers of rain,
in subtly changing signs of Autumn arriving,
in unexpected encounters with nature through animal, insect or plant,
in delightful tastes and aromas of nourishment enjoyed.

Help us, Lord, to be aware of these little signs of life,
not taking them for granted, but responding
in gratitude to your steadfast love that endures forever.

Holy God, you come to us in our connections with people -
in loving, warm embraces of mothers,
in encouraging and emboldening affirmations of fathers,
in caring help given without request,
in shared generosity of kindnesses shown,
in sensing a deep belonging amongst others.

Help us, Lord, to be aware of these little signs of life,
not taking them for granted, but responding
in gratitude to your steadfast love that endures forever.

Holy God, you come to our world in the one we call Jesus -
in humble, vulnerable beginnings, not unlike ours,
in life lived in community, yet for others,
in love displayed through word, yet emphasised by deeds,
in displays of power in humility, like riding on a lowly donkey,
in pursuit of passion even though it led to a cross.

Help us, Lord, to be aware of these signs of your life,
not taking them for granted, but responding
in gratitude to your steadfast love that endures forever.
Amen.

Confession (referencing Psalm 51)
Lord God,
we have sinned against you;
we have done evil in your sight.
(Pause)

We are sorry and repent.
Have mercy on us according to your love.
Wash away our wrongdoing and cleanse us from our sin.
Renew a right spirit within us
and restore us to the joy of your salvation,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
(Pause)

May God almighty who is full of mercy
cleanse us from our sins,
and rebuild us in the image of God
to the praise and glory of the name above all names,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Lord’s Prayer (From Good News Bible (GNT), Matthew 6:9-13)
Our Father in heaven:
May your holy name be honoured;
may your Kingdom come;
may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today the food we need.
Forgive us the wrongs we have done,
as we forgive the wrongs that others have done to us.
Do not bring us to hard testing,
but keep us safe from the Evil One.
Amen.

Song: Holy Moment (Click on title to go to song)

Bible Reading: Matthew 21:1 – 11 (Today is Palm Sunday – the 6th Sunday in Lent)

Reflection or Meditation (Engage in conversation and allow for time to think, reflect, pray or just be still)

  • Spend a few minutes imagining the sounds, smells, movements, people and events of this story as though you were there.
  • Think then chat about what an equivalent act of humbling oneself would be today, as Jesus did in riding a donkey.
  • What might this account tell you about God . . . and you?

Song: Praise the Lord who reigns (Click on title to go to song)

Prayer for God’s guidance (People may take turns praying)
Lord Jesus Christ today we have been reminded of your
triumphant entry into Jerusalem, even as we are confined to our
homes.

Give us the courage to face this turbulent period with humility,
love and determination.

In the midst of fear and chaos, give us your peace and willingness to do God’s will.

Our world is large, and yet the global community is so fragile.
We glimpse the needs of our sisters and brothers, and those needs are great.

We want to turn away, but you call us back.
We want simple solutions, but you want us to help solve the
complex problems.

Through your Church, you call us to listen, to learn, to reflect
and to act.

Give us a deep sense of our place in this intricate web of Creation.

Give us the wisdom of mind and generosity of heart to seek
your will in the world today. Inspire us to respond to the call
to live in solidarity with impoverished countries of the world,
so that all children of God might live in dignity and peace.

In Jesus’ name we ask this, Amen.

Benediction (If you have palms, wave them as you say together:)
Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord!
Blessed are all God’s children.
Blessed are we to hear God’s word and share God’s love with each other.
Blessed are we as we journey through Holy Week.
Feel and know the love of God this week as we walk with Jesus and experience the Holy Spirit moving among us.
Hosanna!
Amen!
